Bulacan leaders mark 136th year of Rizal's historic letter to Malolos women

Leaders of the Bulacan provincial government commemorated the 136th year of Dr. Jose Rizal's letter to the Women of Malolos with a wreath-laying ceremony on Feb. 22 in Barangay Sto. Niño, Malolos City.

At the Bautista House, City Arts and Culture Head Gertrudes De Castro and Women of Malolos Foundation President Vicente Enriquez highlighted Rizal’s advocacy for women’s rights.

The Provincial History Office, through a message read by History Coordinator Billy Joe Marciano, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting historical and cultural initiatives.

VSE Production presented a poetic debate on women’s roles, followed by a speech from Bulacan Centro Escolar University Vice President Dr. Maria Flordeliza Anastacio.

The program concluded with a screening of The Women of Malolos which depicted their bravery in fighting for education and women’s rights.

Rizal wrote his letter on Feb. 22, 1889, while in Europe, after learning from Marcelo H. del Pilar about the Malolos Women’s efforts to establish a night school for learning Spanish.

They had bravely petitioned Governor-General Valeriano Weyler and their determination earned Rizal’s admiration.

In his letter, he praised their intelligence, courage, and commitment to education—values that continue to inspire Filipinos today.
