Angge Poyos and Regina Jurado formed a deadly 1-2 punch and University of Santo Tomas wore down University of the East, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, for its first win in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22.

Apart from Poyos and Jurado, the Golden Tigresses also drew inspired games from Margaret Altea and Bianca Plaza in the fourth set to prevail and hand the Lady Red Warriors their second straight defeat.
Poyos, who bagged last season’s Rookie of the Year award in runaway fashion, came through with another stellar show and finished with 21 points off 14 kills, four blocks and three aces.
Jurado was more lethal, firing 22 points off 18 attacks, two blocks, and two aces.
“Tinyaga talaga namin nu’ng training, kaya thankful maganda ‘yong naging resulta (ngayon),” said Poyos.
The win is likely to give UST an extra boost in time for its duel with La Salle on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
It likewise negated Cepada’s 20-point effort for UE which is clearly struggling after star spiker Casiey Dongallo and two others transferred to UP.
It was a double celebration for UST as the Tigers demolished the Red Warriors, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.
The Tigers played minus star player Josh Ybañez due to injury, but his absence hardly mattered at all as four players stepped up to get back to the winning column.
Jan Julian Macam led the España-based crew with 14 points built on 12 kills and two blocks, while Edlyn Paul Colinares and Jay Rack De la Noche chipped in 12 points apiece. Rey De Vega also contributed with 10 points.
Roy Piojo was the only Red Warrior who tallied in twin figures with 13 points built on 11 spikes and two blocks as they absorbed their second straight defeat.
In the second game, De La Salle outhustled Adamson, 25-21, 26-24, 25-20, to clinch its first win.
Coming off a rare opening-game loss to National University last week, the Lady Spikers regained their winning from behind the efforts of Angel Canino for the hard-earned victory.
Canino steadied La Salle’s ship and poured 15 points on 14 attacks and one block, while Alleiah Malaluan and Shevana Laput posted 16 and 10 points, respectively.
“Doon sa mga pinagdaanan namin nung game na ‘yon, [for sure] may mga natutunan ‘yong mga bata kagaya no’ng kailangan nila ma-overcome ‘yong pressure,” said De Jesus.
After a spectacular 33-point performance last opener, Shaina Nitura managed with 16 points while rookie Frances Mordi finished with 12 points in a losing cause for the Lady Falcons.
