170 sacks of trash collected in Tondo creek

Around 170 sacks of garbage were collected by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) during a cleanup operation at Estero de Magdalena in Tondo, Manila.

The MMDA reported that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the MMDA-Metro Parkways Clearing Group, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the local government of Manila, and the Estero Rangers.

According to MMDA data from 2024, Metro Manila generates approximately 11,000 kilograms of waste daily.

The agency estimates this figure will rise to 13.3 million kilograms daily, or 4.67 million tons per year, by 2025.

"Mahalaga ang pagpapanatili ng kalinisan nito at ng iba pang estero para maiwasan ang pagbaha. Sa disiplina ng mga mamamayang nasa paligid nito ang pagtitiyak na basura-free ang estero. Dahil kung walang basura, walang bara at kung walang bara, ay maaaaring mabawasan ang insidente ng pagbaha sa lugar (It is important to maintain the cleanliness of this and other esteros to prevent flooding. The discipline of the people living around these areas is key to ensuring that the esteros remain free of trash. Because when there is no waste, there are no blockages, and without blockages, the incidence of flooding in the area may be reduced)," it added.
