Quick police response busts man who robbed jeepney passengers in Manila
In ideal scheme of things, policemen are supposed to be on time either to prevent crimes or immediately bust law offenders.
This was how it happened along Blumentritt Road in Manila after a quick police response led to the arrest of an icepick-wielding man who demanded money from the passengers of a jeepney on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Police Brig. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin, director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), lauded his men at the Manila Police District for the immediate response, saying it sends a strong message in further winning back the trust and confidence of the public.
“This operation is a clear demonstration that criminals have no place in Metro Manila. The immediate and precise action of our MPD personnel proves our unwavering commitment to protecting the public,” said Aberin.
He said that such a quick response is in line with the anti-crime strategies he has been implementing—efficient, proactive, and deeply rooted in community service.
Citing a report from his men, Aberin said the suspect boarded a jeepney and immediately threatened the passengers of harm while showing an icepick.
This left the passengers with no option but to give in, but one of them discreetly captured the incident on video and later provided authorities with crucial evidence.
“After receiving the report, Manila Police District personnel immediately launched a targeted operation to track, locate, and apprehend the suspect. Within mere hours, the criminal was identified, pursued, and arrested,” said Aberin.
He said the rapid response is a principle he wants to become a regular practice in all units to ensure that police officers remain able to act with precision and efficiency, active in crime suppression, and allied with the community in safeguarding public order.
The suspect is now in police custody, and appropriate charges will be filed against him. Authorities assure the public that he will be held accountable for his actions and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Aberin urged commuters to stay alert, report suspicious activities, and always prioritize personal safety.
“The successful resolution of this case highlights the importance of community cooperation in crime prevention and reinforces the unbreakable alliance between the police and the public,” he said.
