The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Friday, Feb. 21 warned that continued heavy rainfall caused by the shear line could heighten the risks of lahar flows and flooding, especially in areas surrounding Mayon Volcano.
The warning was issued following a weather advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), highlighting the threat posed by the persistent rainfall in the Bicol Region.
Phivolcs said lahar flows could affect communities downstream of Mayon Volcano, where volcanic deposits from past eruptions remain highly susceptible to erosion.
The agency urged vigilance in Albay, particularly along the Mi-isi, Mabinit, Buyuan, and Basud channels.
“Potential lahars and sediment-laden streamflows may occur along the Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag, Buyuan, Basud, and Bulawan channels in Albay province,” it said.
Phivolcs further explained that post-eruption lahars, driven by the ongoing rainfall, could destabilize volcanic deposits from the January-March 2018 and June-December 2023 eruptions.
It urged local government units and residents in high-risk areas to stay informed through PAGASA’s weather updates and take necessary precautionary measures to mitigate potential hazards.
