BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental--Panfilo "Ping" Lacson gave an honest-to-goodness response when asked her about the chances of his ticket, the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas slate, of scoring a 12-0 sweep in the mid-term polls.
According to Lacson, declarations or predictions of a 12-0 sweep in the Senate race are nothing more than statements "out of arrogance" and "a little psychological warfare".
"Pang demoralize sa kalaban lang ‘yon (It's meant to demoralize other candidates)," said the Lacson, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, in press conference here Friday, Feb. 21.
He then made the audience laugh when he admitted, "Wag kayong maniwalang kami mismo naniniwalang 12-0 (Don't believe that we ourselves are convinced that we can make it 12-0)."
"Pero ‘yon nga sabi best effort ‘di ba? So kailangang kumayod (But like what they said, best effort right? So we need to work hard)," said Lacson, who is aiming for a Senate comeback.
Comprising the 12 administration bets were former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III; former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Benhur Abalos; former senators Lacson, Manny Pacquiao; Senators Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Francis Tolentino, Imee Marcos; Makati City Mayor Abby Binay; House Deputy Speaker Las Piñas City lone district Rep. Camille Villar; and House Deputy Majority Leader ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo.
Alyansa's top endorser is none other than President Marcos, who has attended all six major campaign rallies of the slate so far.
These rallies were held in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Carmen, Davao del Norte; Pasay City in Metro Manila; Dumaguete, Negros Oriental; and Bacolod, Negros Occidental.
Alyansa campaign manager, Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco earlier said that 21 campaign rallies had been lined up for the administration ticket during the 90-day campaign period.
Curiously, Tiangco had also said that a sweep wasn't realistic, and that the group's strategy would instead focus on boosting the individual candidates' chances of winning.
