Human rights group Karapatan has reiterated its call to disbar former president Rodrigo Duterte over his attempt to serve as one of the legal counsels of his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, in her upcoming Senate impeachment trial.
For the group, the former leader is undermining the integrity of the legal profession, "and he is unfit to be a lawyer".
"It is distressing that he continues his practice, and this time in the petition of his daughter at the Supreme Court," Karapatan said.
"This is why the Court must act with expediency in resolving the disbarment complaint against Rodrigo Duterte," it added.
In January, the group joined several human rights advocates, religious leaders and relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings in filing a disbarment case against Duterte for allegedly violating the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA) and for conduct unbecoming a lawyer.
Meanwhile, Karapatan also called on the Senate to proceed with the impeachment trial of the Vice President.
"We are one with former Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares in his letter pressing for a special session of the Senate to proceed with the impeachment and in fulfilling its obligation according to the Philippine Constitution," it added.
Karapatan said it is steadfast in in its support for the people’s demand to hold the Dutertes accountable for human rights violations, corruption and other crimes.
This as they said they "persist in exposing and opposing the Marcos Jr. administration’s accountability for the same high crimes against the Filipino people".
