'Sira ulo': Pimentel scores PDP-Laban wing for asking him to stop using party name his father founded
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday scored the Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) wing allied with former president Rodrigo Duterte for asking him to stop using the name of the party which he previously headed.
This was after the PDP-Laban issued a statement asking him to refrain from using the party name when he wrote Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero asking him to immediately act on the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Pimentel said he could not understand why the PDP-Laban Cusi-wing is prohibiting him from using the name of the party that was founded by his father, the late Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr.
“Yung kaso namin sa (the case that’s pending before the) Comelec (Commission on Elections) was about the leadership of the party,” Pimentel said during the Kapihan sa Senado forum on Thursday, February 20.
“Sira pala ulo nila sasabihin nila sa akin yun, e hindi pa nila ako kini-kickout sa party. Tapos aangal sila eh andun pa sa existing stationery ko yung PDP-Laban,” he pointed out.
Pimentel stressed the issue about the leadership of the PDP-Laban remains under dispute at the SC.
The PDP-Laban Pimentel-wing had earlier challenged the decision of the Comelec recognizing the faction of former energy secretary Alfonso Cusi as the legitimate PDP-Laban party.
“So malay natin mare-reverse pa yan (who knows that might still be reversed) and then at the same time, si Cusi, sinabihan ako na di naman ako in-expel sa partido nila. Eh ayoko naman makasama sila. Di naman nila ako in-expel so bakit aangal sila ngayon na gamit ko pa ang PDP-Laban na partido ko namang tunay ‘yan (Cusi told me that I am not expelled from the party. But I don’t want to join them. They did not expel me so why are they complaining that I am still using the PDP-Laban when it’s my real party),” he explained.
“Partido ng father ko yan at ako bumuhay nyan hanggang sa time na may kaso na sa Comelec (That’s my father’s party and I was running it until the time the case reached the Comelec),” he said.
According to the PDP-Laban Cusi-wing, Pimentel no longer has any legal or moral right to use the name PDP Laban because the Comelec has ruled with finality on March 23, 2023 that the group led by former President Rodrigo Duterte is the true and legitimate PDP Laban.
“Therefore, only the group led by President Duterte has the right to use the party name,” the group said in a statement.
“Moreover, Pimentel has left the party and has transferred to the Nacionalista party. He is running for Mayor of Marikina under the banner of the Nacionalista Party as reflected in his Certificate of Candidacy (COC),” they added.
However, Pimentel confirmed that while he is running for mayor under the banner of the Nacionalista Party of former Senate president Manny Villar, the NP gave the original PDP-Laban party the right to use another party’s Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance or CONA.
Pimentel said he, and former Sen. Manny Pacquiao—who are both party officials of the original PDP-Laban—are using this route for the May 2025 elections.
“Nag-national assembly kasi kami ng (We had a national assembly with my) PDP-Laban ko, the originals and they give me permission, as well as Sen. Manny Pacquiao na (that) for purposes of the May 2025 elections we can use another party’s CONA.
“So lahat yan anticipated na namin, na cover na namin (we have anticipated and covered all those questions). So we are still with PDP-Laban. In case we win the case in the SC, we will be ready to assume leadership legally speaking of our own party,” Pimentel reiterated.
“In the meantime, yung pag gamit namin ng (using) other party’s CONA (is allowed by our original faction of the PDP-Laban, in a national assembly, very specific, plus allowed din nung hosting party,” he said referring to the Nacionalista Party.
Asked if he is endorsing the current senatorial candidates of the PDP-Laban, Pimentel strongly said “no.”
“Hindi! Hindi ko ine-endorso yun. May kaso pa nga kami sa Supreme Court (I am not endorsing them. We still have a pending petition before the SC),” he said.
