The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will elevate the Tulaoc Overpass Bridge in San Simon, Pampanga starting on Feb. 24 to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and mitigate flooding disruptions.
DPWH Region III Director Roseller Tolentino said the project follows NLEX Corporation’s recent elevation of a 200-meter stretch of NLEX in San Simon by 0.7 meters after severe flooding in 2023 submerged parts of the expressway and overpass.
“To provide adequate clearance for trucks, trailers, and other large vehicles, the overpass will be raised by an additional 1.5 meters,” Tolentino said.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier directed DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan to implement long-term flood mitigation measures in Pampanga and Bulacan following his inspection of flood-affected areas last year.
Tolentino confirmed that the project is fully funded under the 2024 national budget.
DPWH Construction Division Chief Jayson Jauco said consultations with the San Simon local government and police authorities were conducted to ensure smooth implementation.
During construction, the Tulaoc Overpass Bridge will be closed to all traffic, while Salusu Road (Sto. Niño side) will remain open for local vehicles.
Motorists traveling to Manila North Road (MacArthur Highway) and Sto. Niño (Tulaoc) are advised to take alternate routes via Sta. Monica Road.
DPWH assured the public that the project will be completed on schedule and appealed for patience and cooperation during the construction period.
