Undeniably competitive of the highest standards, Joan Monares could hold the traits of a true-blooded Maroon.

A proud native of Bacolod City, Monares has been on a tear and led the University of the Philippines to an impressive 2-0 start in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament.
The cheerful and charming outside hitter said the early success of the State U is attributed to the team's off-season work -- a testament to their goal of reaching new heights after years of futile efforts.
“I’m happy kasi napanalo namin ‘yong second game namin, and hindi ‘yon tyamba. Kasi we work on that, really hard, for it during the training,” said Monares.
“I’m happy and proud na lumabas ‘yon sa laro namin kanina. Lahat kami naghirap, tinrabaho namin ‘yong kada point,” she added. “This game is just a stepping stone para mas ma-reach namin ‘yong mas mataas na level ng laro namin and we're hoping po talaga sa magandang finish this season.”
The 5-foot-10 product of Bacolod Tay Tung High School stood out anew in the Diliman-based squad’s 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 win over Tin Ubaldo and the FEU Lady Tamaraws (1-1) last Wednesday, Feb. 19, listing 19 points on 17 kills and two aces along with eight excellent digs.
It was a good encore following her 17-point output in their victory over the UE Red Warriors last weekend.
Notably, UP’s triumph over FEU marked its first win against the Lady Tamaraws since June 2022.
The State U has also eclipsed its one-win performance in each of the past two seasons, making this early run a promising one for all the Maroon faithfuls.
“Laking boost ‘yon sa mga sarili namin, kasi napakita namin ‘yong laro and alam ko pa na meron pang mas iaangat ‘yon,” Monares said as the Maroons could make it 3-0 when they meet the injury-plagued Ateneo Lady Eagles (0-2) on Sunday, Feb. 23.
