All Filipinos deserve equal access to legal assistance -- CHR

All Filipinos -- particularly the marginalized, disadvantaged, and vulnerable -- deserve equal access to legal assistance.

This was stressed by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) as it expressed full support to the passage of Senate Bill (SB) No. 2955, also known as the "Hustisya Para sa Lahat Act (Justice For All Act)."

SB 2955, authored by Sen. Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, plans to ensure equal access to justice for all Filipinos.

Under the proposed law, the marginalized, disadvantaged, and vulnerable sectors would be accorded legal aid by refining the statutory definition of indigent under the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO).

In a statement, the CHR said that the State should strengthen its mechanisms in order to provide fair legal representation and protection for all its constituents, and the bill ensures just that.

"Expanding legal assistance not only promotes fairness and inclusivity but also enhances public trust in the Philippine justice system -- reinforcing the rule of law and the fundamental principles of democracy," the CHR said.

As the country joins in the observance of World Day of Social Justice, the CHR issued a reminder of every Filipino's shared responsibility of fostering an inclusive community.

Through the said bill, the CHR said Filipinos from every socio-economic status or financial capacity would be accorded legal assistance, thus ensuring that financial constraints will not be an impediment to justice and that the fundamental right of every Filipino would be upheld.

The CHR pointed out: "After all, the foundation of justice is rooted in how we recognize and uphold the rights and dignity of all. Akin to the saying, 'those who have less in life should have more in law,' we take this opportunity to emphasize the need for Senate Bill No. 2955 to receive the attention it rightfully deserves."

It stressed that "access to justice and equal representation are essential pillars of democracy, and this bill represents a significant advancement in making these guarantees a reality for more individuals in need."
