SteelAsia ships Philippines' largest steel export for Vancouver subway

SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. said it has solidified its position as a leading global steel supplier with the shipment of the Philippines' largest steel export to date.

In a statement, Benjamin Yao, SteelAsia chairman and chief executive officer, said that the company has shipped 32,000 metric tons shipment of high-strength reinforcing steel, valued at over $19 million (₱1.1 billion), departed from SteelAsia's Davao City plant on January 30.

Its destination: a subway project in Vancouver, Canada.

This single shipment represents the largest steel export ever from the Philippines, Yao said.

SteelAsia noted that this shipment contributes to their overall exports for the Canadian subway project, which now total 87,000 metric tons and approximately ₱3.2 billion.

“We have repeat orders from the same buyer and project, a vote of confidence in our reliability as a supplier and in the quality of our products. Locally, it is the same for us since the top developers are our biggest loyal customers,” Yao said.

SteelAsia operates four steel mills throughout the Philippines.

The company added that they are currently building a green steel H beam plant in Lemery, Batangas, and will soon commence site development for a second green steel H beam plant in Candelaria, a ₱30 billion investment.
