Revised Senior High School curriculum to be implemented this school year — Angara

The Department of Education (DepEd) plans to roll out the revised curriculum for Grades 11 and 12, or the Senior High School (SHS) Program, this coming School Year (SY) 2025-2026.

“Maganda ang takbo (It is going well),” DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said when asked for updates on the revision of the SHS curriculum on the sidelines of the DepEd Human Resource and Organizational Development (HROD) Convention in Pasay City on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

“Maganda ang reception ng ating mga eskwelahan (The reception in our schools has been positive),” Angara said.

“Natutuwa sila dahil mababawasan ang mga subjects, at pati yung mga estudyante natutuwa at yung mga teachers (They are happy because the number of subjects will be reduced, which will benefit both students and teachers),” he added.

Angara noted that the implementation of the revised SHS curriculum will start this coming school year but will be done in phases.

“So this coming school year, meron naman na (it will already be implemented),” he explained. “Pero hindi natin mamadaliin dahil, syempre, yung iba't-ibang eskwelahan may kanya-kanyang kakayahan para mag-enforce nito (However, we won’t rush it because, of course, different schools have varying capacities to enforce it),” he added.

Angara said DepEd is considering the capacities of schools, as most will likely need to hire new staff and prepare the curriculum.

“So yun, bibigyan natin sila ng oras para makapag-comply sila (We will give them time to comply),” he added.

DepEd is revising the SHS curriculum to ensure that the program remains relevant and produces future-ready graduates.

The key principles guiding the revision of the SHS program, DepEd said, include decongesting and simplifying the SHS curriculum; putting a premium on learner choice; ensuring “stackability and seamlessness” to facilitate progression; and strengthening industry linkages.

End-of-school-year rites, June opening of classes

As the current school year nears its end, Angara also reminded schools to strictly implement existing policies on graduation and end-of-school-year rites.

“No compulsory charges, strikto tayo diyan (We are strict about that),” Angara said, reiterating DepEd’s “No Collection Policy.” He added that contributions sometimes required by Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) should be voluntary.

Regarding the school opening, Angara said the June start of classes will likely push through.

“Palagay ko, tuloy na. Marami nang naka-adjust sa panibagong school year at iyan talaga ang gusto ng ating Pangulo (I think it will push through. Many have already adjusted to the new school year, and this is exactly what the President [Marcos] wants),” he added.
