CHR condemns killing of barangay official of Pagadian City
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has condemned the killing of a barangay official of Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur last Feb. 5, calling it a "violent act" that does nothing but foster fear and intimidation, especially among public servants.
The slain councilor from Barangay (village) Poblacion, Kumalarang, was identified as Francisco Maca Jr. He was shot dead in broad daylight by armed assailants in front of Saint Columban College campus in Pagadian City. The suspects have yet to be identified.
"CHR vehemently denounces this violent act, which fosters fear and intimidation among public servants dedicated to serving their communities. Leaders and law enforcers must be able to perform their duties free from threats or violence. Attacks of this nature are not only an affront to democracy, peace, and the rule of law -- they must be stopped," the CHR said in a statement.
Maca was said to be well-known in the area for strictly enforcing municipal ordinances aimed at combating crime. He was also a staunch supporter of law enforcement efforts in the barangay.
Prior to the incident, the barangay councilor also stood as a campaign manager for another electoral candidate in the area.
As authorities now investigate the motive behind Maca's killing and try to determine whether this was politically motivated, the CHR has simultaneously deployed a Quick Response Operation through CHR Regional Office IX to aid in uncovering the truth and ensuring justice.
"We also raise concern over the increasing violence in Region IX," the CHR said. "With the 2025 National and Local Elections approaching, now more than ever, we must work together to ensure safer and more secure communities," it said.
The CHR has urged authorities to quickly act in order to identify and prosecute those involved in the crime. "Violence should never be used to silence those who are committed to public service and upholding the law," it also said.
