The P28.9-million project involves the replacement of corroded bolts, steel members, and steel plates, the replacement of damaged expansion joints using the finger-type expansion joint, and the replacement of other damaged major bridge components.
OIC-District Engineer (OIC-DE) Irwin Antonio of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Biliran District Engineering Office (BDEO) said that the contractor started deploying manpower and construction materials on Feb. 8 after a Notice to Proceed (NTP) was issued.
Antonio reported that the contractor has started mobilizing equipment and materials to be used as scaffoldings and other preparatory repair activities.
He added that the repair is expected to be completed by June.
Antonio said there will be no bridge closures while the repair is ongoing.
At present, the bridge is passable only to vehicles weighing five tons and below while heavy vehicles above the recommended weight limit are transported using barge.
Biliran Bridge went viral online on Dec. 23, 2024 when it exhibited wavelike movements.
The bridge is the only link of the province by land to mainland Leyte since its construction in 1976.
