Philippine Red Cross on standby to supply blood amid dengue surge
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Monday, Feb. 17, expressed its readiness to supply blood to patients across the country as dengue cases continue to surge.

“I always remind everyone that the Red Cross is ready to provide blood anytime, anywhere—libre at laging may dugo sa (free and always available at) Red Cross,” said PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon in a statement.
“With the rising demand for blood, especially as dengue cases increase across the country, we are committed to ensuring that every hospital has the supply it needs to save lives,” Gordon added.
As Quezon City declared a dengue outbreak, the Department of Health (DOH) also confirmed an upward trend in cases—surpassing 28,000 as of February.

Sufficient supply, blood donation
Gordon assured the public that a “sufficient blood supply is readily available” for those affected by the mosquito-borne disease.
However, PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang stressed the importance of blood donation, as demand for blood is high during dengue outbreaks.
“I encourage everyone to make blood donation part of your lifestyle because it is not only good for your health, but it also helps save lives,” Pang said.
The PRC reiterated the organization’s capacity to supply blood.
From January to mid-February of 2025, the PRC was able to dispense 1,078 blood units for dengue cases, a 106 increase from 524 blood units in 2024.
Moreover, the PRC served 360 dengue patients from January to mid-February of 2025, a 109% increase in the number of patients provided with blood compared to 172 patients from the previous year.
The PRC has 102 chapters nationwide, 108 blood service facilities, 32 blood centers, 76 blood collection stations, and 15 apheresis centers.
The public may call the PRC hotline at 143 for blood assistance and other emergencies.
