The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) welcomed a recent report saying that no journalists were killed in the Philippines last year, saying this was a significant step in their efforts to ensure the safety of media workers.

The PTFOMS said this after a Committee to Protect Journalists special report published last week said that the Philippines marked its first time in 20 years without a journalist killed.

"The Philippines marked its first year in two decades without a journalist killing, which analysts said could indicate that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has taken a comparatively milder tone toward the press than his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte, who frequently threatened the media," the report read.

In a statement, the PTFOMS acknowledged and welcomed the report and recognized the dedication of those upholding press freedom and protecting media professionals.

"This development is a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of media workers in the Philippines," it said on Monday, Feb. 17.

"The absence of journalist killings in 2024, as reported, is a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies, media organizations, and civil society, in promoting a safer environment for the press," it added.

Despite the encouraging development, the PTFOMS reiterated its dedication to upholding the constitutional guarantee of press freedom and ensuring journalists can perform their duties without fear of reprisal.

It also assured media workers it remains committed to investigating and addressing threats and violence against journalists.

"We recognize that the fight for media security is an ongoing process, and we cannot afford to be complacent," it said.

"We continue to monitor and address all forms of threats and harassment against journalists, including online attacks, intimidation, and other forms of violence," it added.

In addition, the PTFOMS said it would Strengthen collaboration with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to ensure swift and effective action.

It likewise vowed to enhance awareness and education programs on media security and safety protocols and continue improving mechanisms for reporting and responding to media security incidents.

The PTFOMS called on media organizations and journalists to continue working with them and other relevant agencies to maintain a safe and secure environment for journalists in the Philippines.

It also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents of threats or violence against media workers.
