National University took down De La Salle, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18, to jumpstart its title defense in UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday, Feb. 16.

The back-to-back title-seeking Lady Bulldogs displayed their prowess before 16,624 fans to also hand head coach Sherwin Meneses a fitting welcome gift in his return to the collegiate scene.
“Syempre happy ako na nanalo kami. Five sets or three sets, parehas lang naman,” said Meneses in his first UAAP victory after eight years.
“Pero syempre, ‘yung three sets, medyo mahirap gawin sa La Salle, kaya happy kami na nakuha namin siya in straight sets,” he added.
As expected, Bella Belen starred for the Lady Bulldogs by drilling in 14 points on 10 attacks, three aces and one block, while Alyssa Solomon also stepped up with 13 points including 12 kills.
Alexa Mata, who started the game over Sheena Toring and Minierva Maaya, had a solid game in the middle with 10 points, including two blocks, while Vange Alinsug and Pangilinan had eight and seven points, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs controlled most of the match, with the Lady Spikers fighting back to turn things around, to no avail. Belen and Solomon took turns in delivering one attack after another, destroying La Salle’s weak net defense.
It was La Salle’s first opening weekend loss since Dec. 2, 2012 where they bowed to University of Santo Tomas in five sets.
Sheena Laput was the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Spikers with 18 points, while Angel Canino was held to only seven points.
Earlier, Shaina Nitura delivered a sensational 33-point performance to steer Adamson past Ateneo, 21-25, 20-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-12.
Nitura set the tone early in the deciding fifth set by draining the team’s first three points before Nigerian wing spiker Frances Mordi stepped up with crucial hits en route to the win.
