ERC approves ₱4.8 billion in NGCP projects to boost power transmission in Visayas, Luzon

To help address power strains and bring in new power transmission, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved four capital expenditure (capex) projects of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

According to the ERC on Feb. 12, NGCP received a green light for three projects in the Visayas, and one in Luzon.

Among the approved projects is the Granada 230-kilovolt (kV) substation project worth ₱1.9 billion, which was designed to address overloading transformers in Bacolod substation. This would also allow new connections for consumers in Negros Occidental, potentially minimizing power interruptions in the area.

The ERC ordered the grid corporation to complete the project on or before August 2028.

Another project in the Visayas, the Sumangga 138-kV substation, is slated to push through its developments after the ERC’s nod.

This substation would help the Ormoc-Baybay 69-kV line overload and minimize load from Ormoc substation.

Valued at ₱1.36 billion, Sumangga substation is anticipated to finish on or before March 2028.

The La Carlota 138-kV substation is also ordered to be completed on or before August 2028, to address overload in Bacolod-San Enrique 69-kV line.

This project, worth around ₱1 billion, is aimed at enhancing the reliability of power supply in Negros Occidental and avoid load shedding and power interruptions.

The ERC also approved one project in Luzon that is set for completion on or before November 2025.

The ₱583.5 million Nagsaag-Tumana 69-kV transmission line project is designed to provide more transmission capacity to cater to rising power demand in eastern Pangasinan.

It is also meant to address the Nagsaag-Umingan 69-kV line overload by transferring other loads of Pangasinan III Electric Cooperative Inc. (PANELCO III) to the new transmission line.
