National University kicked off its five-peat bid in grand fashion with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 victory over De La Salle on Sunday, Feb. 16, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Bulldogs leaned on their core holdovers anchored on Alas Pilipinas spiker Buds Buddin and skipper Leo Aringo to make their title retention campaign felt this early.
Aringo delivered 20 points built on 19 attacks including back-to-back crosscourt kills that punctuated NU’s 6-1 run in the third frame that set the tone for throughout the game.
Timely hits from Jan Abanilla, Leo Ordiales and Buddin also sealed the victory for NU.
“Thankful ako sa naging resulta ng panalo namin kasi lahat ng gusto naming mangyari sa loob ng court, nagawa namin,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin.
“Yung mga adjustment na pwede namin gawin, naka-adjust agad kami. Sobrang thankful din ako sa performance ng players ko kasi team effort talaga. Sana magtuloy-tuloy ito,” he added.
The Bulldogs still displayed depth and cohesion despite the departure of key players Nico Almendras and Joshua Retamar, with Buddin contributing 18 points highlighted by 17 attacks.
Ordiales, likewise, debuted on a high note by scoring nine points along with three digs, even as Congolese middle blocker Obed Mukaba added six points built on four kills and two blocks.
NU also capitalized on the absence of La Salle’s top hitter, Vince Maglinao, securing a convincing sweep against a still-stacked Green Spikers squad featuring Noel Kampton, Eco Adajar, and Nat del Pilar.
The Bulldogs asserted their dominance in the attack department, outgunning La Salle 20-11 in the second set to establish a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Uriel Mendoza was the lone bright spot for La Salle with 10 points, while only five other players scored that included Kampton, who had nine points.
Earlier, Ateneo recovered from a third-set stumble to turn back Adamson, 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23.
Kennedy Batas poured 24 points built on 17 attacks, five blocks and two aces, while Amil Pacinio tallied 18 points with 14 attacks.
