Lawmakers from the Makabayan bloc on Saturday, Feb. 15, hit former president Rodrigo Duterte’s threat to kill senators, which they said show how the Dutertes view their political rivals.
In a campaign rally in Manila, Duterte recently suggested killing “many senators” in a bomb blast supposedly to make vacancies for his endorsed candidates.
For House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Party-list Rep. France Castro Duterte’s remarks “are not jokes".
They are “dangerous and show the true nature of how they view political opposition—as targets for elimination", she added.
Meanwhile, Gabriela Women’s Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas believed that Filipinos “are done with these theatrics".
“No amount of violent rhetoric and threats can shield the Dutertes from accountability for thousands of lives lost and the systematic corruption under their watch,” Brosas added.
Duterte’s daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, was impeached by the House of Representatives for making a death threat against President Marcos, among other reasons.
For Castro, Duterte’s pronouncement is “concerning", considering that it came from a former president.
“Hindi biro ang pagpatay. Hindi biro ang terorismo. Ang mga ganitong pahayag ay nagpapakita ng tunay na kulay ng kanilang pamamahala — na mistulang nagpapatay o pumapatay ng sinumang kumakalaban sa kanila (Killing is not a joke. Terrorism is not a joke. This kind of pronouncement shows their true colors in governance—that they can kill anyone who opposes them),” Castro said.
