The proposal for former president Rodrigo Duterte to run for the Palace seat in 2028 reeks of desperation and is a blatant attempt to misinformation Filipinos.
Thus, said House Majority Leader and La Union 1st district Rep. Paolo Ortega V, who noted that the move was an admission that their election bet in 2028 won't win.
“This is the most desperate plan I’ve seen. It shows they’ve run out of cards to play,” Ortega stated.
“Aminadong olats na ang kanilang manok at wala na talagang ibang baraha sa dami ng negatibong mga isyung kinakaharap nila. Buking na buking pang hindi sila pro-Pinoy. Pro-China sila,” Ortega lamented.
(It's an admission of defeat for their bet and they've run out of cards due to the sheer number of negative issues they are facing. It's no longer a secret that they're not pro-Pinoy. They're pro-China."
He underscored that the 1987 Constitution prohibits a president from seeking re-election.
“Hindi siya puwedeng tumakbo ulit maliban na lang kung amyendahan ang Konstitusyon (He cannot run again unless the Constitution gets amended). This is clear in our laws,” Ortega explained.
While the Luzon congressman didn't name this bet, the member of the Duterte political clan whose closest to the presidency right now is the ex-president's daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte.
The Vice President was impeached by the House of Representatives during a historic plenary session last Feb. 5. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) had also recently recommended the filing of grave threats and sedition charges against the younger Duterte.
"They are trying to distract us from the real issues. Ginagawang komedya para maiwasan ang lahat (They're making a comedy out of it to avoid everything),” Ortega said.
The "Yougn Guns" bloc member expressed concern over the blatant misinformation of the Filipino people to make them think Duterte can still run as president in 2028.
“It’s evil to think that we can just fool the people with misinformation when our Constitution strictly prohibits the reelection of a president,” Ortega said.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and not be swayed by such tactics. “We must be cautious and not allow ourselves to be deceived by these desperate moves."
“Marami tayong dapat pagtuunan ng pansin na mas mahalaga kaysa sa mga ganitong pakulo (We have more important things to attend to than these shenanigans),” Ortega noted.
The elder Duterte filed a certificate of candidacy (COC) for mayor of Davao City ahead of the mid-term elections this year. He is going up against former Davao City 1st district congressman Karlo Nograles.
