The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is bringing the “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program” to five more regions in its third year of implementation in 2025.

DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said the program will be extended to Ilocos Region, Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mimaropa, and Caraga.

“There are so many testimonials that we have documented—from college students and parents—saying that the tutoring program has helped them and their families. Some even said the cash-for-work is just an extra benefit. That is why we are bringing it to other regions,” Dumlao said.

The participating areas in the newly added regions include Pangasinan (Ilocos Region); Camarines Sur, Albay, and Sorsogon (Bicol Region); Zamboanga City (Zamboanga Peninsula); Odiongan, Romblon, and Puerto Princesa City (Mimaropa); and Butuan City and Surigao del Norte (Caraga).

This year, the program will benefit 138,407 individuals, including struggling and non-reader elementary learners, their parents or guardians, and college students from poor households.

“In the five new regions, we are targeting 19,343 beneficiaries. Of this number, 16,820 are elementary learners and their parents or guardians, while 2,523 are college students who will be trained as tutors and youth development workers (YDWs),” Dumlao said.

During its second year, the program provided cash-for-work to 10,608 college students who participated in tutoring and parenting sessions and assisted 61,805 parents and guardians in the “nanay-tatay teacher” sessions.

In addition, 62,418 grade school learners benefitted from the tutoring sessions.

“Apart from the new regions, we will continue the implementation of the tutoring program in the National Capital Region (NCR), Regions 3 (Central Luzon), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), 10 (Northern Mindanao), 12 (Soccsksargen), and Calabarzon (Region 4A),” Dumlao said.

The tutoring and nanay-tatay teacher sessions are scheduled from May to June.

The program is part of DSWD's reformatted educational assistance and was recently designated as a flagship program through Executive Order 76 signed on Nov. 22, 2023.
