
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a magnitude 5.3 earthquake that struck parts of Eastern Visayas at 8:50 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14.
The tremor’s epicenter was located 32 kilometers northeast of Hernani, Eastern Samar.
Initially measured at a magnitude of 5.6, the quake's magnitude was revised to 5.3.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Hernani, Maydolong, Balangkayan, General Macarthur, and Llorente in Eastern Samar.
It was recorded at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Balangiga, City of Borongan, Giporlos, Guiuan, Lawaan, Mercedes, Quinapondan, Salcedo, San Julian, Sulat, and Taft in Eastern Samar.
It reached Intensity III (weak) in Can-Avid, Dolores, Oras, and San Policarpo in Eastern Samar; Alangalang, Carigara, Dulag, Jaro, La Paz, Leyte, Macarthur, Mayorga, Palo, Pastrana, Santa Fe, Tanauan, Tolosa, Tunga, and Tacloban City in Leyte; and Basey, Calbiga, City of Catbalogan, Hinabangan, Jiabong, Motiong, Paranas, Pinabacdao, San Jose De Buan, San Sebastian, Santa Rita, Talalora, and Villareal in Samar.
Meanwhile, it was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Arteche and Jipapad in Eastern Samar; Abuyog, Burauen, Isabel, Javier, Julita, Kananga, Mahaplag, Tabontabon, and Ormoc City in Leyte; Catubig, Gamay, Las Navas, and Mapanas in Northern Samar; and City of Calbayog, Daram, Gandara, Marabut, San Jorge, and Santa Margarita in Samar.
It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Palapag in Northern Samar.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, resulting from the movement of an active fault in the area.
The agency also advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may follow.
