Sintang Dalisay

Synopsis: Areté and Tanghalang Ateneo proudly present Sintang Dalisay, one of Dr. Ricardo Abad’s best Shakespearean adaptations.
Set in an imagined Muslim community in Southern Philippines, Sintang Dalisay is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—now named Rashiddin and Jamila, a pair of star-crossed lovers caught in a generations-long feud between their families, the Mustaphas and Kalimuddins.
The two lovers must navigate their secret love through the rough seas of hate and violence. This tale is told through the emotive, evocative, and sensual undulations of the Igal, a traditional dance of the Sama-Bajau people, and the enchanting neo-ethnic and gamelan music, weaving Shakespeare’s tragedy of fate with the Filipino sense of festive love and enduring hope.
Opening on Feb. 14, Sintang Dalisay runs for only nine shows:
- Matinees (2 p.m.): Feb. 15, 16, 22, and 23
- Evening Shows (7:30 p.m.): Feb. 14, 15, 21, 22, and 23
