The Bolts seemingly ran out of batteries for a final push in the second extension as the Kings went on a deciding 9-0 run to create the separation and join Hiroshima, Ryukyu and Taoyuan in the playoffs set in Macau on March 7 to 9.
It was a tough loss for Meralco considering that the PBA representative looked to be on its way to victory when it took a comfortable 72-63 lead midway through the final frame.
The Kings, however, made a last ditch run and sent the game to an extra period.
In the first OT, Meralco returned the favor as New Taipei, which looked like it had the victory already on the bag after taking a 91-87 lead, got struck by lightning with a four-point play in reverse from the Bolts.
At the foul line, Chris Newsome purposely split his charities, allowing Ange Kouame to get the rebound and issue a pass to Aaron Black. He missed the corner triple but the ball bounced its way to the hands of Jansen Rios who drilled a last-gasp triple to send the game to the second overtime.
DJ Kennedy had 21 points for Meralco while Chris Newsome added 17. Akil Mitchell and Bong Quinto had 15 apiece but were not enough as the Bolts sustained a second straight heartbreaker after also losing a do-or-die Game 3 last Sunday against Ginebra in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup.
Leading the way for the Kings were Sani Sakakini and Austin Daye with 31 and 24 points, respectively, while Joseph Lin, brother of former NBA player and New Taipei main man, Jeremy Lin had 19.
Meanwhile, an undermanned San Miguel once again exited the tournament winless after dropping a 94-81 decision against Suwon.
Jeron Teng paced the Filipinos with 17 while Juami Tiongson added 14 for the Beermen which played without an import and stars June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez due to their Gilas Pilipinas duties.
