Taking a cue from President Marcos' fiery speech, Zambales 1st district Rep. Jay Khonghun is calling on Filipinos voters to reject the return of the main characters in the previous Duterte administration.
Doing so would supposedly spare the Philippines from a future of increased Chinese influence in its territorial waters, illegal drugs and Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), criminal syndicates, and rampant corruption, just to name a few.
Khonghun, and assistant majority leader, said allowing the Duterte family to regain full political control beyond 2025 would purportedly "bring back the worst failures of their administration".
“We cannot forget how Duterte bowed to China and set aside our victory at The Hague. Under his watch, China built military bases in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), while Filipino fishermen were harassed and blocked from our own waters. Now, they want to return to power? The Filipino people should not allow it,” he said.
Rodrigo Duterte served as president from 2016 to 2022. His allies are vying for senator in the May 12 elections under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) slate.
Khonghun said the previous administration allowed China to trample on the country’s rights in the WPS as well as the entry of illegal POGOs with ties to criminal syndicates.
"Gusto ba talaga nating bumalik sa panahong iyon? (Do we really want to back to that time period)?" said Khonghun, who had been angered by the Chinese vessels' shooing away of local fishermen in Philippine territorial waters.
President Marcos nentioned these issues sans the Duterte name in his speech during the campaign kickoff rally of the administration-backed Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
It was Marcos' most thorough thrashing yet of the opposition, whom he chided for being rag-tag and incomplete unlike the Alyansa 12.
Like Marcos, Khonghun also alluded to the bloody war on drugs by the previous administration.
“We saw thousands of Filipinos – mostly the poor – gunned down in the streets without due process while drug lords and corrupt officials walked free,” he said.
“We have to investigate the allegations that the previous administration plundered billions meant for public health. Funds for face masks, PPEs (personal protective equipment) and medical supplies were funneled into pockets of corrupt officials. Filipinos must remember this theft when they vote,” he further said.
