Acts of service most popular love language among Filipinos, survey shows

Love and companionship top Valentine's gift wish list, surpassing money

Sixty-seven percent of adult Filipinos express their love through acts of service, making it the most common of the five love languages, based on the national Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey conducted from Dec. 12 to 18, 2024.

The survey results were released late Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Examples of acts of service include cooking a meal, running errands, helping with chores, or fixing things around the house—even without being asked.

Following acts of service are words of affirmation and quality time, with 51 percent each, giving gifts at 33 percent, and physical touch at 29 percent.

Love and companionship: Most wished gift for V-Day

In line with the love languages, the December 2024 survey also revealed that love and companionship topped the wish list for Valentine’s gifts, with 19 percent, surpassing money (10 percent), which was last year's most cited wish.

Love and companionship were the most wished-for Valentine’s gift among both men (20 percent) and women (17 percent), followed by any gift from the heart (9 percent) and flowers (8 percent) among men, and money (15 percent) and flowers (12 percent) among women.

Love life decline

The December 2024 survey also found a record-low 46 percent of Filipinos saying they were "very happy" with their love life.

Meanwhile, 36 percent said they could be happier, and 18 percent said they had no love life.

The 46 percent who were very happy with their love life marked a 12-point decline from 58 percent in December 2023, and the lowest percentage in 20 years, since 2004.

Compared to 2023, happiness with love life declined among men and women, across civil status categories, particularly among men living with partners.

The Fourth Quarter 2024 Social Weather Survey is non-commissioned and was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 2,160 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide: 1,080 in Balance Luzon (Luzon outside Metro Manila), and 360 each in Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
