LAOAG CITY--Election candidates know that the campaign period is the perfect time to highlight your achievements.
For Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial bet Benhur Abalos, his efforts in going after three controversial personalities during his time as former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) deserves to be mentioned.
"Ako po si Benhur Abalos, isang abugado. Dati po akong mayor ng Mandaluyong (I am Benhur Abalos, a lawyer. I am a former mayor of Mandaluyong)," Abalos told the 7,000 to 8,000--strong crowd that had gathered at the Centennial Arena here for Alansya's campaign kickoff rally.
"Pagkatapos naging [congressman] tayo, pagkatapos nito'y naging DILG secretary tayo. Eto na. Ang assignment ko, hulihin at tugusin isa-isa (After that I became a congressman, and after that I became DILG secretary. This is it. My assignment was to go after them one by one)," he said.
"Number one, si [dismissed Negros Oriental 3rd district] congressman Arnie Teves na [diumano'y] pumatay kay Governor [Roel] Degamo (Numbe one is congressman Arnie Teves who allegedly killed Govenor Degamo).
"Sumunod si [dismissed Bamban, Tarlac] Alice Guo. At ang pinakahuli, Si [Kingdom of Jesus Christ founder] Pastor Apollo Quiboloy (Next was Alice Guo. And the last one was Pastor Apollo Quiboloy)," said Abalos, whose enumeration was met with huge applause by the Ilocanos.
As DILG secretary, Abalos had supervision over the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Abalos continued his pitch to Ilocano folk: "Mga kasama, hindi lang galing at husay ang kailangan. Kung kailangang tumayo ka mag-isa, tumayo ka (My compatriots, expertise and skills aren't the only ones needed. If you need to take a stand on your own, then take a stand)."
"At kailangan ng tapang na gunawa ng desisyon. At higit sa lahat, ang puso magmahal sa kapwa tao (And there must be courage in making decisions. And most of all, you must have the heart to love your fellow man)," the aspiring senator said.
