SAN MARCELINO, Zambales -- A tricycle driver was arrested for allegedly running over a police officer in a Commission on Elections checkpoint in Barangay Nagbunga here on Feb. 9.

The suspect was identified as Bert, 25, of Barangay Cawag, Subic, Zambales.
Investigation said Bert was driving a black Honda TMX 155 when he was flagged down by Police Corporal John Nelson Flores, 36, for inspection.
Instead of complying, he accelerated
and hit Flores in the leg. Flores was treated in a hospital.
Police Brig. Gen. Jean S. Fajardo, Police Regional Office-3 chief, denounced the attack and reaffirmed the Philippine National Police commitment to securing the electoral process.
“This reckless assault on one of our officers is an attack on the very peace and order we are sworn to protect. Our police personnel put their lives on the line daily to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of our communities — especially during this crucial election period. Let this be clear: Any act of violence against our officers will be met with swift justice. We will exhaust all legal means to hold the perpetrator accountable. I call on the public to respect and support our men and women in uniform as we work together for a secure and orderly election.”
The suspect faces charges of frustrated homicide and disobedience to lawful orders.
