'Tokhang-style': Dela Rosa details how he will implement his senatorial campaign
Reelectionist Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said on Tuesday, February 11 he is keen on utilizing a “tokhang”-style of campaigning for the duration of the May 2025 midterm elections.

Dela Rosa, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief and the implementer of the Duterte government’s controversial anti-illegal drugs campaign, said he will use such tactics to spur his senatorial campaign.
“Kung kelangan mag step up, we have to step up…kung kelangan magbahay-bahay,” Dela Rosa said in an ambush interview when asked how he would improve his ratings in senatorial surveys.
“Sanay naman tayo sa tokhang ‘di ba? Binabahay bahay natin yung mga bahay, kinakatok natin ‘di ba? So pwede nating gawin yun (We’re used to tokhang right? We visit every house and knock right. So we can also do that),” he added.
“Oo, so tokhang talaga. Toktok, hangyo — Knock and plead. Katukin mo ang pinto ng bahay, pag (You knock on the door of a house and once) open you smile (then) you plead — ‘Pwede niyo ba akong iboto?O ganon (Can you please vote for me? Like that),” he explained.
“Pero kung pag open ng bahay nakasimangot, ay sorry po, sorry po, alis na ako (But if they open it and are frowning, I’ll say sorry, sorry, then I will leave),” he said.
Nevertheless, Dela Rosa said he is well aware that anyone who hates “tokhang” will not vote for him.
The term “tokhang” is a made-up portmanteau of the local words for “knock” (tok) and “plead” (hangyo), and became popular at the height of the Duterte administration’s brutal war on drugs as authorities would conduct their anti-drug operations by making house to house visits and knocking on doors of houses.
Dela Rosa is running as a senatorial candidate running under the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan’s (PDP-Laban) senatorial slate.
According to the senator, former president Rodrigo Duterte will be present during the group’s proclamation rally to be held at Club Filipino in San Juan on Thursday, February 13.
