Standee no more: De Lima savors taste of freedom in kick-off rally in Cavite
There’s no need to take a selfie with former senator Leila de Lima’s standee as she can now freely campaign in person as Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist first nominee.

Addressing the crowd of supporters in the proclamation rally held at Dasmariñas Arena in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, the former senator was all smiles as she came on stage after Mamamayang Liberal Partylist co-nominees Teddy Baguilat and Erin Tañada carried her standee.
“Teka, teka, wait lang. Ano ginagawa niyan dito? Nandito na ako. Malaya na ako. Malayang Leila (Wait, wait, wait. What is that doing here? I’m here. I am free. This is a free Leila). This is a thing of the past,” she said of the standee.
De Lima shared how much she missed “this kind of energy” and discovered her love of taking selfies with her supporters, saying that she was not allowed to have a phone with her while detained at the Camp Crame Detention Center for trumped-up drug charges filed by the Duterte administration.
“Ang sarap mangampanya nang hindi ka na standee (It’s so nice to be able to campaign in person),” she added.
The former senator, who ran but lost in the 2022 elections, was detained for almost seven years, and released only during the Marcos administration and amid pressure from the international community.
All three of the drug charges filed against her were dismissed by the courts shortly thereafter.
Her freedom, she said, was an “answered prayer” but threw shade at those who put her in detention.
“Sinungaling ang mga nagpakulong sa akin. Sila dapat ang ikulong (Those who put me in jail are liars. They should be the one jailed),” she said.
De Lima was a fierce critic of former president Rodrigo Duterte, whom she pointed as the mastermind behind the trumped up drug charges that put her in detention.
Hoping to make a comeback this time as a partylist representative, the former senator and human rights commissioner explained why she wanted to go back to politics.
“Kami sasangga sa mga nang-aapi, sa mga nasa laylayan. Kami ang magiging malakas at matapang na boses para sa mga marginalized sectors (We will be the shield against the oppressors who abuse those in the fringes of society. We will be strong and we will raise our voices for the marginalized sectors),” she added.
The proclamation rally in Cavite was held also for the senatorial candidacies of former senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino.
Former vice president Leni Robredo joined to show support for Aquino, Pangilinan, De Lima, Baguilat, and Tañada. Akbayan Partylist nominees Chel Diokno and Percival Cendaña were also at the proclamation rally.
