LAOAG CITY--The Alansya para sa Bagong Pilipinas has vowed to play it clean during the campaign period for the mid-term elections, which the administration-backed senarorial slate launched here on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The slate, led by Alyansa campaign manager Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco, was asked about the possibility of negative campaigning during a press conference just before the campaign kickoff at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena here.
"Hindi, walang negative tactics di ba? (No, there will be no negative tactics, right?)" Tiangco said in behalf of the Alyansa "senatoriables".
"Ang importante, ipaalam lang sa ating mga kababayan kung paano ang ating mga kandidato ay makakatulong sa plataporma ng ating Presidente," he said.
(What's important is we impart to our countrymen how our candidates can help our President with his platform.)
Attending the press conference were Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III; former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary Benhur Abalos; former Senators Panfilo Lacson, Manny Pacquiao; Senator Francis Tolentino; Makati City Mayor Abby Binay; House Deputy Speaker Las Piñas City lone district Rep. Camille Villar; and House Deputy Majority Leader ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo.
Pacquiao, a boxing icon who has titles in eight divisions, also thumbed down negative tactics in this year's election campaign.
"Ang amin lang po dito sa grupo Alyansa, gusto lang po namin talaga ipahayag sa inyong lahat ang saloobin namin na gusto namin talaga umunlad ang ating bansa. Kaya po kami ay talagang naka pokus doon sa pwede naming gawin sa bansa natin para ang taumbayan ay guminhawa," said the bet, who is seeking a return to the Senate.
(As for us in the Alyansa group, all we want is to express to all of you our intent of achieving progress for our country. That's why we're really focused on what we can do for our country, for the benefit of our countrymen.)
Another candidate on the comeback trail, Lacson, invoked the 'golden rule" that was taught to Filipinos in elementary.
"Two words: golden rule. Kung ayaw mong gawin sa iyo ng kapwa mo, huwag mo rin gawin (Don't do to others what you don't want others to do unto you)."
"Walang maidudulot na maganda ang negative campaigning. Rise on your own merits. Gamitin mo ang sarili mong track record, experience, at gagawin mo sa halip ng manira ng iba," explained Lacson, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief.
(Negative campaigning won't do anybody any good. Rise on your own merits. Use your own track record, experience, and platform instead of slandering others.
Re-electionists Senators Imee Marcos, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. didn't attend the press conference, but were expected to appear at the kickoff rally.
