PH Navy names new second-in-command

The Philippine Navy (PN) designated Brigadier General Edwin E. Amadar as its 58th vice commander on Friday, Jan. 31.

Amadar was sworn into office during an assumption ceremony presided over by PN Flag Officer in Command, Vice Adm. Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta at the Navy headquarters in Manila.

Amadar replaced Ezpeleta, who, on top of being the Navy chief since November last year, was also serving as the acting vice commander before the recent appointment.

Amadar, a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Sambisig” Class of 1991, previously served as commander of the Fleet-Marine Ready Force before assuming the role of Navy’s second-in-command.

In his speech, Amadar said that stepping into the position as the second highest official of the PN “is both a privilege and an honor.” 

“As the alter ego of the Flag Officer In Command, I will complement his vision and initiatives, ensuring the Navy remains a cohesive, mission-driven team,” he said.

According to the PN, the vice commander plays a key role in supporting the Flag Officer in Command in overseeing the operational readiness and strategic direction of the organization. 

Further, it said that the vice commander coordinates Navy units, aids in decision-making, and ensures the protection of the nation’s maritime interests.

Ezpeleta congratulated Amadar, his fellow graduate at PMA Class 1991, on his newest designation.

“I place my complete trust and confidence in you as the new Vice Commander. This is not just because you are a mistah, but because I am confident in your ability to deliver, given your unwavering dedication to your craft, your credibility, and your distinguished service reputation,” the Navy chief told Amadar.
