To support the growth of local health innovations, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have come together to simplify regulatory processes, paving the way for quicker market entry of health technologies while safeguarding public health.
The two agencies convened on Jan. 30 at the DOST Central Office in Bicutan, Taguig City, where key officials discussed strategies to support local innovation through regulatory simplification and capacity-building initiatives.
According to the FDA, a major focus of the meeting was the creation of a green lane to expedite the registration of locally developed food, drug products, medical devices, and functional cosmetics.
Officials also tackled simplifying clinical trial approvals, refining functional food labeling standards, and leveraging expert support through the Balik Scientist Program.
FDA Director General Samuel Zacate reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to regulatory streamlining, emphasizing the need to strike a balance between efficiency and public health protection.
“The FDA is dedicated to streamlining regulatory processes to help local technologies reach the market faster without compromising the safety, efficacy, and quality of health products,” Zacate said.
Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. highlighted the critical role of developing a robust health technology ecosystem.
“By working together, we can create an environment where local innovations thrive and benefit our communities,” Solidum said.
DOST’s OneLab Network was highlighted as a key resource in capacity-building and laboratory support for emerging health technologies.
Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, the executive director of the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), emphasized the critical need to turn research into practical policies and programs, a view shared by the agency.
DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang stated that the partnership reflects their shared commitment to advancing health technology and ensuring Filipino-made solutions align with global standards.
