Celebrating 125 years of the Manila Bulletin: A pillar of truth and integrity

As the Manila Bulletin marks its 125th anniversary, we are reminded of the profound impact this venerable institution has had on Philippine society. Since its founding in 1900, the Manila Bulletin has steadfastly upheld its commitment to truth, integrity, and journalistic excellence.


For more than a century, the Manila Bulletin has been at the forefront of delivering timely and relevant news to the Filipino people. It has chronicled the nation’s triumphs and tribulations, serving as a reliable source of information in times of peace and conflict, prosperity and hardship.


As a columnist for the Manila Bulletin and its sister publication, Tempo, since 2002, I have witnessed firsthand the evolution of this esteemed publication. The dedication of its editors, journalists, and staff is unparalleled, and their collective efforts ensure that the Bulletin remains a beacon of trustworthy journalism.


Some of my fondest memories as a former reporter include interactions with Columnist Jullie Yap Daza (then with the Manila Times, Daily Mirror, Taliba), who was my go-to resource person for hourly newscasts at DZMT radio station; Joe de Vera, the dean of Department of National Defense Reporters, who mentored me as a young reporter covering the Defense beat; Jun Icban, to whom I submitted my weekly columns and who later succeeded me as Press Secretary during the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo; and the late Publisher Don Emilio Yap, whom I first met when I was mayor of Muntinlupa. Following a devastating typhoon that ravaged Luzon, including Muntinlupa, Don Emilio donated ₱1 million for relief and rehabilitation. Much later, I learned from a Bulletin insider that Don Emilio was pleasantly surprised to receive a full-liquidation report of his donation.


On this occasion, we not only celebrate the Bulletin’s storied past but also look forward to its promising future. In an era where information is abundant but often unreliable, the Manila Bulletin continues to stand as a pillar of veracity and professionalism.


Here’s to 125 years of unwavering commitment to the truth. May the Manila Bulletin continue to thrive and inspire generations to come.
