To ensure a safe New Year celebration, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Tuesday, Dec. 30, urged the public to avoid illegal firecrackers and warned that violators may be arrested.
Domagoso stressed that the Manila Police District (MPD) will intensify patrols and confiscate illegal firecrackers, saying that those caught may end up welcoming the New Year in jail, a consequence he said can easily be avoided by following the rules.
“Kung pupwede, iwasan po natin ’yung mga paputok na pinagbabawal. Lalo mag-iikot ho ang Manila Police District. At ’yung mga tinitignan na hindi pupwede at hindi kinikilala ng pamahalaan or pinapayagan, ay kukumpiskahin. At baka magkaroon pa ng kaso—labing-limang bagong taon, sa selda po inaabot (If possible, let us avoid using prohibited firecrackers. The Manila Police District will intensify its patrols, and firecrackers that are not allowed or not recognized by the government will be confiscated. Violators may also face charges and end up spending the New Year in jail),” he said.
During an interview with reporters, the mayor said there are many safe and festive ways to welcome the New Year without endangering lives or property, stressing that the city government’s top priority is to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and injury-free celebration for Manileños and their families.
He reiterated that selling or using unregistered and prohibited firecrackers is not allowed and reminded residents that watching fireworks displays is a safer alternative.
Meanwhile, he cautioned would-be violators that Manila’s extensive CCTV network makes it only a matter of time before they are identified and apprehended.
“Doon naman sa mga individual, adventurero, eh ’wag niyo nang subukin dahil nagkalat ang CCTV sa Maynila. At malamang sa hindi, matter of time, mahuhuli din namin kayo (To those individuals who may be tempted to take risks, do not even try it because CCTV cameras are widespread in Manila. It is only a matter of time before we catch you),” he warned.
Addressing these individuals, the mayor urged them to stop such activities or take them elsewhere.
“Kaya sana, bagong taon na, magbagong buhay na kayo. Kung ayaw niyo naman, magbagong address kayo, ’wag sa Maynila (So hopefully, with the New Year, you will change your ways. If not, at least change your address—just not in Manila),” he said.
