Filipino singer Gwyn Dorado gets highest score, enters final top 4 on Korean TV contest 'Sing Again 4'
Filipino singer and contestant No. 59 Gwyn Dorado entered the final top 4 of Korean channel JTBC’s singing competition TV show “Sing Again 4” by securing first place with the highest score.
“Sing Again 4” is a music audition TV show that gives singers a second chance to sing again on stage.
From the original 81 contestants, the show narrowed it to the top 4 finalists during the 12th episode on Dec. 30.
The top 7 contestants, including Dorado, performed new songs from producers.
They were evaluated by the judges and the audience. The final tally was calculated using 70 percent judges’ score and 30 percent audience votes.
The final score was calculated based on a total of 1,000 points per singer. The judges' scores were determined based on the sum of the eight judges' scores, which are based on a 100-point scale. The members of the audience voted by pressing the O/X buttons.
The judges are Lim Jae-beom, Yoon Jong-shin, Baek Ji-young, Kim Eana, Kyuhyun of Super Junior, Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation, Lee Hae-ri and Code Kunst.
Dorado, who turned 21 last Dec. 10, performed “I Want You” from producer Kim Do-hoon. She impressed the judges again with her powerful voice and stage presence.
“And actually, if you just keep singing high notes and then suddenly drop down to mid-low notes, your throat gets a little tired. But Dorado didn't feel that at all. So it was really amazing,” said judge Baek Ji-young.
When the judges’ scores were revealed, Dorado got a perfect score of 100 from each of the judges except for Super Junior member Kyuhyun who gave her 98.
The judges who gave her a perfect score were Lim Jae-beom, Yoon Jong-shin, Baek Ji-young, Kim Eana, Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation, Lee Hae-ri and Code Kunst.
As a result, Dorado got a total of 798 points out of 800 from the eight judges, the highest score a contestant got from the judges among the show’s four seasons.
“Wow, this looks like the highest score in season history,” said emcee and actor Lee Seung-gi.
“I’m sorry,’ Kyuhyun apologized as he realized that he was the only one who did not give her 100. The other judges teased him for giving Dorado the score.
After the audience’s votes were combined, the top 4 were revealed, showing Dorado securing first place with a total score of 981.
Of her total score, Dorado got a weighted judges’ score of 698 (first place) and a weighted audience’s score of 283 (first place).
Others who made it to the final 4 were Lee O-wook with 954 points, Kim Jae-min with 918, and Slowly with 840.
Dorado cried when it was announced that she was among the final top 4 contestants.
“I'm really so happy and what I'm looking forward to is, my family is really excited for the final, and this is exciting, tears of joy,” she said.
The four will compete in the 13th and final episode on Jan. 6 where the winner will be determined.
They will perform a new song from a producer and their own choice of a cover song. The new songs of the top 4 will be pre-released on Korean music streaming sites at 6 p.m. KST on Dec. 31 and the streaming numbers from sites Melon and Genie until 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 4 will be tallied and reflected in the selection of the final winner.
The final winner ranking will be calculated by adding the first round's new song score (20 percent), the final judges' score (30 percent) online pre-voting scores (10 percent), and real-time text and online votes (40 percent). The final episode will air on Jan. 6.
The winner of “Sing Again 4” will receive a cash prize of 300 million won (about $208,477).
