'Wag maging kamote! PNP warns motorists as road crashes rise days before New Year

The Philippine National Police (PNP) urged motorists and travelers on Tuesday, Dec. 30, to strictly follow traffic rules amid a rise in road crashes days before the New Year.
Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., acting PNP chief, emphasized that strict adherence to traffic rules is crucial to prevent road crashes, which have increased in recent days amid the holiday rush.
“We are coordinating with concerned government agencies for road safety intervention as we monitor an increase of road crashes in the past few days,” Nartatez said.
He cited a deadly bus crash along Marilaque Highway in Infanta, Quezon on Dec. 29 that killed one person and injured 28 others.
At least six people were also killed in a separate bus crash along Andaya Highway in Del Gallego, Camarines Sur on Dec. 26.
Nartatez said these incidents highlight the need for stricter compliance with traffic rules.
“We appeal to the motorists to strictly observe road safety measures that include checking your own vehicles and adhering to traffic rules and regulations. Sama-sama nating salubungin ang Bagong Taon na maayos ang kalagayan kasama ang ating pamilya (Let us welcome the New Year together in good condition and safely with our families),” he added.
Nartatez said among the interventions being done is road worthiness inspection of passenger buses at terminals and checking on the mental and physical readiness of bus drivers.
Nartatez warned that drunk driving and overspeeding will not be tolerated. He said violators will be dealt with under existing laws.
Police forces nationwide have also intensified traffic monitoring and enforcement operations.
