DAVAO CITY – City officials and military leaders honored Dr. Jose Rizal's legacy Tuesday, urging a daily commitment to service, righteousness, and love of country on the 129th anniversary of his martyrdom.
The wreath-laying ceremony at Rizal Park was also attended by consular corps members and police officers.
Mayor Sebastian Duterte, in a speech delivered by Councilor J. Melchor Quitain Jr., said Rizal's sacrifice awakened the nation's collective consciousness and "ignited the flame of freedom.”
He challenged Davaoeños to participate in nation-building by upholding the law, fostering unity, and helping the vulnerable.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Diaz, commander of the 1003rd Infantry Brigade, said Rizal’s story is a reminder that heroism involves acting for the greater good.
“Heroism is not only about grand gestures but the strength to go beyond oneself and act for the greater good of the many,” Diaz said. (PNA)
