CEBU CITY – The provincial government of Bohol recognized its athletes who competed in the recent 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
In a courtesy visit to the Capitol, the group of athletes was conferred by Gov. Aris Aumentado with the Governor’s Sports Excellence Award.
Leading the honorees was swimmer Miranda Renner, who helped Team Philippines’ campaign by winning two silver medals. Also recognized were members of Team Pétanque, which brought home bronze. Members of the team were Mark Anthony Bon, Julius Philip Bon, Rogelio Hermosa, Jefry Deiro, and Harry Micutuan.
The Philippines finished sixth overall in the biennial meet, collecting 277 medals – 50 golds, 73 silvers, and 154 bronzes.
Aumentado said the impressive showing of Boholano athletes in the SEAG is a big boost to the province’s youth development program.
The governor emphasized that empowering youth is part of his key priorities.
“If we look at the percentage in the province, the youth is a big part of the population. They are about 361,000 currently and all the more that we have to focus on them,” said Aumentado.
Through the Provincial Youth Development Office, Aumentado said key programs such as sports activities must be created to boost the young Boholanos’ personality development.
“We will certainly support initiatives that will have a positive impact on the youth,” Aumentado said.
