The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reminded its personnel on Tuesday, Dec. 30, to strictly observe firearm safety and discipline as the New Year celebration approaches.
The AFP said there is no directive requiring the taping of firearms of military personnel this holiday season.
“All soldiers are expected to strictly follow existing regulations on the safe and responsible handling of firearms,” it noted.
The AFP also called on its units to remain alert during the holiday period. It noted that security threats persist and that lawless groups continue to have access to firearms.
“Commanders at all levels are directed to reinforce supervision, accountability, and heightened alertness within their units,” it said.
The AFP noted that it will continue to safeguard the people while ensuring that New Year celebrations remain peaceful, orderly, and free from harm.
The traditional sealing of firearms used to be practiced by the Philippine National Police (PNP) to avoid the risk of illegal discharge of firearms, which could lead to civilian death by stray bullet.
However, for this year, the police organization has opted not to implement the measure.
Instead, the PNP is focusing on strict adherence to existing firearm safety protocols, intensified monitoring of personnel, and enforcement of a one-strike policy where erring personnel will immediately be removed from the service.
As for the AFP, there is no formal or standing tradition of “sealing” or taping firearms for New Year celebrations even in previous years. The practice is also not mandated by any AFP directive.
“While there is no specific directive mandating the taping of firearms for the New Year, all personnel are strictly reminded of their individual responsibility to exercise discipline and uphold the highest standards of professionalism,” the AFP said.
