AFP links Jose Rizal's ideals to modern security duty

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) marked the commemoration of the 129th Rizal Day on Tuesday, Dec. 30, by honoring Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom while drawing parallels between the national hero’s ideals and the military’s role as it marked its 90th anniversary this year.
The commemoration of Rizal Day was held at the Rizal National Monument in Rizal Park, Manila, carrying the theme, “Rizal: Sa Pagbangon ng mga Mamamayan, Aral at Diwa Mo ang Tunay na Gabay,” which the AFP said reflects the resilience of the Filipino people and the enduring relevance of Rizal’s ideals.
The ceremony was led by AFP Commander-in-Chief and President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. with AFP Acting Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Jimmy D. Larida, who served as military host during the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites.
The AFP said the observance carried added weight this year as the institution reflects on nine decades of service. It cited Rizal’s principles of integrity, courage, and love of country as guiding values amid evolving security challenges and the defense of national sovereignty.
In a Rizal Day message, AFP Chief of Staff, Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr. said Rizal’s life awakened national consciousness and continues to shape the character of Filipino soldiers.
“Rizal's belief that a nation's strength rests on principle and character continues to guide the AFP in fulfilling its constitutional mandate to protect the people and secure the sovereignty of the State,” he noted.
He stressed that the military’s constitutional mandate remains anchored on honor, service, and patriotism.
“For nine decades, the AFP has upheld the ideals Rizal stood for-selfless service, patriotism, and unwavering devotion to the nation-through the sacrifices of generations of Filipino soldiers who stand guard over our land, seas, and skies,” he pointed out.
“As we confront evolving security challenges and strengthen our defense of national sovereignty, we remain guided by the values that define us as an institution-honor. service, and patriotism-anchored on the enduring legacy of our National Hero,” the military chief added.
Other government and civic leaders attended the ceremony, including National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairman Regalado Trota Jose Jr.
Members of the Knights of Rizal and officials of the Manila city government were also present.
Meanwhile, Philippine Army (PA) Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete also paid tribute to the “timeless lessons from the life and works of one of our country’s national heroes.”
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), whose top officials also joined the national observance in Manila, said Rizal’s teachings remain relevant as the country faces present-day challenges on land and at sea.
In Baguio City, the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) joined local officials at the Rizal Shrine, rendered a 21-gun salute, and provided ceremonial support during their Rizal Day rites.
The PMA said the ceremony highlighted its efforts to instill patriotism and historical awareness among the cadets.
Rizal Day has been observed annually on December 30 since 1898, following a decree by President Emilio Aguinaldo. The date marks the execution of Rizal in 1896 at Bagumbayan (now Luneta Park), a pivotal moment that fueled the Filipino revolution against Spanish rule.
