Mayor Edwin: Choose joy over injury during new year revelry

Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez reminded residents to welcome the New Year responsibly, emphasizing the importance of celebrating safely with family rather than ending up in a hospital emergency room due to firecracker-related injuries.
Olivarez said that every year, fireworks and firecrackers cause preventable injuries, especially among children. These include burns, eye injuries, and hearing damage—turning a moment of celebration into weeks, or even a lifetime, of pain and recovery.
He urged the public not to let the festivities be spoiled by avoidable accidents and encouraged residents to join the city government’s call for a safer New Year by choosing alternatives that protect lives while keeping the festive spirit alive.
The mayor advised residents to avoid fireworks and firecrackers, which pose serious risks to health and safety.
Instead, Olivarez suggested using safe alternative noise-makers at home, such as music, whistles, or party horns, or watching community fireworks displays where proper permits, safety measures, and sufficient security are in place.
He said that welcoming the New Year should be about hope, happiness, and togetherness—not hospital visits and regret.
The mayor added that in line with the directive of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Parañaque City Peace and Order Council, personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conducted inspections of various firecracker vendors across the city on Dec. 26.
The joint inspection aimed to ensure compliance with safety regulations and prevent firecracker-related accidents in welcoming the New Year celebration approaches.
Authorities closely checked permits, storage conditions, fire safety measures, and the types of pyrotechnic products being sold, stressing that public safety remains the top priority.
Residents were reminded to exercise caution and responsibility during the New Year celebration, particularly in the use and purchase of firecrackers.
The city government, together with the PNP and BFP, called on the public to cooperate and support safety initiatives to ensure a peaceful and safe holiday season for everyone.
