Caraga logs first firecracker-related injury this Christmas
BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Health in Caraga (DOH-13) reported on Monday the first firecracker-related injury in the region since the start of the Yuletide season.
In a statement, DOH-13 said the victim is a nine-year-old boy from Surigao City in Surigao del Norte province who sustained an injury to his right eye.
The report said the victim’s eye injury was caused by a firecracker labeled “boga” on Sunday afternoon.
“The victim was immediately brought to a medical facility for treatment. He is now in stable condition,” the DOH-13 said.
The boga, or "PVC cannon," is a modern version of the bamboo cannon used during celebrations like New Year's Eve, producing loud sounds with denatured alcohol as fuel. It has been banned nationwide since 2006.
The agency noted that such pyrotechnics can cause serious injuries like burns, cuts, eye damage, and finger loss, requiring prompt medical attention to prevent complications, infections, and save lives.
Following the incident, the agency reminded Caraga residents to protect their families and communities from the dangers of firecrackers.
The DOH-13 asked residents to welcome 2026 with a celebration of joy, laughter, health, and togetherness, far from the dangers of firecrackers. (PNA)
