BANGUED, Abra – A soldier died after he was accidentally shot by a colleague cleaning his service firearm inside their camp in Barangay Poblacion, Lacub, Abra, on Christmas Day.
Police identified the victim as Private First Class Archie Calawit, assigned to Charlie Company of the 50th Infantry Battalion.
Investigation said the firearm allegedly accidentally discharged, hitting Calawit in the left shoulder, with the bullet exiting through the upper part of his chest.
Calawit was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
The soldier surrendered to authorities and faces appropriate charges.
Calawit’s remains were taken to the family’s residence in Baguio City.
