No tsunami threat to Philippines after Taiwan quake, says Phivolcs

There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a strong earthquake in the Taiwan region, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Saturday night, Dec. 27.
“No tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” the agency said in its Tsunami Information No. 1.
According to Phivolcs, the earthquake occurred at 11:06 p.m. on Dec. 27, with a magnitude of 6.7, and was located in the Taiwan Region at a depth of 35 kilometers.
The agency said its evaluation showed that “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data.”
It added that the bulletin was issued “for information purposes only.”
Phivolcs said the tsunami information was released at 11:31 p.m. on Dec. 27, adding that this will be the only bulletin issued unless additional information becomes available.
