The Philippine Navy (PN) said on Saturday, Dec. 27, that it kept patrols active across key waters in Eastern Mindanao to prevent maritime threats during the holiday season as most Filipinos marked Christmas with family gatherings.
From December 22 to 25, Joint Task Force Sinaya personnel under Task Force Seahawk of the Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM) conducted continuous patrols in the Davao Gulf, Davao Occidental, and Sarangani waters.
Deployed assets included two attack boats, BA489 and BA491, from the 3rd Boat Attack Division; patrol craft BRP Alberto Navarette (PC394), and landing craft BRP Tagbanua (LC296) which carried out littoral combat patrols along the eastern and southeastern seaboards.
The PN also boosted surveillance by deploying air and surface assets during the Christmas period. TC-90 aircraft NV392 and corvette BRP Artemio Ricarte (PS37) joined patrol operations to widen maritime coverage and improve response capability.
Commodore Ireneo D. Battung, commander of NFEM, said the sustained operations aimed to prevent illegal maritime activities and other security threats that could take advantage of the holidays.
“The continuous conduct of maritime patrol operations even during the holidays underscores JTF Sinaya’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests,” he said.
He added that the continued presence of naval units helped ensure peace and order across Eastern Mindanao waters.
Earlier, BRP Alberto Navarette also conducted extended littoral combat patrols from December 16 to 23 which covered Samal Island, Sarangani Bay, the coastal areas of Maasim, Kiamba, and Maitum, as well as Macajalar Bay, Gingoog Bay, and Butuan Bay.
Aside from security patrols, the crew of BRP Alberto Navarette distributed gifts to fisherfolk during the mission.
The activity, known as “Regalong Handog ng Hukbong Dagat,” aimed to strengthen ties between the Navy and coastal communities.
“This initiative was conducted in the spirit of the Yuletide season and aimed to help strengthen civil-military relations with local fisherfolk encountered during patrol operations,” Battung said.
