A minor phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at the main crater of Taal Volcano on Friday afternoon, Dec. 26, generating ash jets and plumes that rose up to 600 meters before drifting southwest, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Phivolcs stated that the eruption occurred at 4:36 p.m. and consisted of four pulses, each lasting two minutes, as recorded by seismic and camera data.
The agency reported that the event produced short and dark jets of ash that collapsed onto the Main Crater Lake, along with light gray to whitish plumes that rose hundreds of meters above the crater before being carried southwest by prevailing winds.
Despite this, Phivolcs said Alert Level 1 remains in effect over Taal Volcano.
Under Alert Level 1, Phivolcs continues to warn the public against entering the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), particularly the main crater and nearby areas, due to the possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatomagmatic eruptions.
