The militant Makabayan bloc castigated President Marcos on Christmas day, Thursday, Dec.25 for failing to fulfill his promise of placing behind bars before Christmas personalities involved in the flood control projects corruption scandal.
The militant solons--ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago, and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co--fully expected Marcos to send high-ranking government officials to jail.
"The deadline has passed, yet not a single 'big fish' has been apprehended," they noted.
“So much for ‘may magpa-Pasko sa kulungan’. Pinaasa lang niya ang sambayanang Pilipino (So much for ‘someone will spend Christmas in jail.’ He only gave false hope to the Filipino people)," the Makabayan said of Marcos.
They said the President's Christmas deadline became "nothing more than empty rhetoric designed to pacify public outrage over massive corruption in his administration".
"The biggest Christmas scam is the administration's pretense of fighting corruption while protecting the powerful and well-connected," the group said.
"The people demand genuine accountability, not seasonal press releases and hollow promises. His anti-corruption rhetoric is merely performance designed to distract from his administration's failures," said the solons from the House minority bloc.
"We call on the Filipino people to remain steadfast in the demand for accountability and to greet the new year with a greater resolve to put an end to systemic corruption," the Makabayan further said.
President Marcos was the one who exposed the flood control projects mess last July during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA). He would launch his anti-corruption drive a few weeks later.
Last September, the Palace-created Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) began looking into the controversy. Several high-ranking congressmen and former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials have since participated in its investigation.
